A lament and prayer

  • Regeneration Church 238 East 15th Street Oakland, CA, 94606 (map)

Our hearts cry out in grief in the devastation of the shootings in Buffalo, NY where Black residents were targeted in a grocery store, at a Taiwanese church in Laguna Woods, CA, and in Dallas, TX at Asian American businesses.

In the pain and anger of injustice, we turn our faces to God.

O Lord, how long shall I cry for help,
    and you will not hear?
Or cry to you “Violence!”
    and you will not save?
 Why do you make me see iniquity,
    and why do you idly look at wrong?
Destruction and violence are before me;
    strife and contention arise.
 So the law is paralyzed,
    and justice never goes forth.
For the wicked surround the righteous;
    so justice goes forth perverted.

-Habakkuk 1:2-4

   Lord, have mercy

The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous
and his ears toward their cry.
The face of the Lord is against those who do evil,
to cut off the memory of them from the earth.
When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears
and delivers them out of all their troubles.
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
and saves the crushed in spirit.
- Psalm 34:15-18

   Lord, have mercy on us

But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
-Ephesians 2:13-18 NIV

Lord, have mercy on us, we are sinners saved by your grace. Amen.
